Open Wide! Chemical Cuisine: Our food is swimming in a sea of potentially harmful synthetic chemicals. From food additives, dyes/colorings and preservatives, to pesticides, to animal hormones, antibiotics and other animal drugs, we are inundated with toxins…even the synthetic chemicals that line the cans and packaging our food comes in has been found in scientific studies to be dangerous. And that’s not even mentioning the mountain of problematic synthetic chemicals in our personal care products. Published, peer-reviewed scientific research on these synthetic and industrialized chemicals has linked them with a myriad of serious health outcomes, leading many countries outside the U.S. to require warning labels or outright bans. Yet, the FDA continues to permit the food and chemical industries to fund their own studies and write their own approvals for these chemicals, without so much as even requiring a warning on food labels for U.S. consumers. The solution? Consumers must educate themselves about what to avoid and how to do it. Luckily, learning to read the labels and recognize the culprits is easy once you know what you should avoid.
